The Boy and the Door
There was a small shop in a little street in an old town. In the shop there were beautiful things made of silver and gold. The small shop had a door that opened on the little street. The shopkeeper was standing at the open door.
“Come and buy! Come and buy!” called the shopkeeper. “Come into my shop and see all the beautiful things!” again he called. “Come in! I shall show you beautiful things made of silver and gold.”
One day the shopkeeper had to go away to the king’s palace. The king wanted a beautiful gold ring and a silver cup from the shop. The shopkeeper called the boy who work for him. “I’m going to the king’s palace,” he said. “You must stay here. Do not leave the door of the shop whatever happens. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I understand,” said the boy.
The shopkeeper went away, and soon he came to the king’s palace. He gave the king, the ring and the cup. Then he went home. Soon he was back at his shop. He stopped and looked up in astonishment. “What is this?” he cried. “Why are so many people going into my shop?” Then the shopkeeper saw that the door of the shop was gone and so was the boy who work for him.
Just then, the shopkeeper saw the boy. He was in the street near the shop. The boy had the shop door on his back. He was standing in the square looking at some men who were doing tricks.
The shopkeeper ran to the boy. “I told you not to leave my shop,” he cried.
“No,” said the boy. “You told me not to leave the door. I did just as you said. I did not leave the door. I have the door here with me.”

Text “ The Embroidered Towel”
The towel on the wall… It’s our ancient custom. There was not a single Ukrainian house , which would not be decorates with towels. A house without a towel was compared with a family without children. A towel symbolized not only aesthetic taste , it was a face of a house and of a hostess. The towels proved that the hostess was tidy and hard-working.
A newly-born child was handed with the towel, guests were met with bread and salt on the towel. A son , a husband, a father were seen off with the towel. While getting married the newly-formed family was standing on a towel too. Bread and salt on an embroidered towel were a symbol of hospitality of the Ukrainian people. To take the towel , to kiss bread symbolized unity, peace, love , understanding among people. This custom has a good tradition in our country.
Towel were used in different ceremonies and in everyday life as well: for wiping a face and hands, for drying dishes, for decorating the houses, for presenting dear people. Text “ The Embroidered Towel”
The towel on the wall… It’s our ancient custom. There was not a single Ukrainian house , which would not be decorates with towels. A house without a towel was compared with a family without children. A towel symbolized not only aesthetic taste , it was a face of a house and of a hostess. The towels proved that the hostess was tidy and hard-working.
A newly-born child was handed with the towel, guests were met with bread and salt on the towel. A son , a husband, a father were seen off with the towel. While getting married the newly-formed family was standing on a towel too. Bread and salt on an embroidered towel were a symbol of hospitality of the Ukrainian people. To take the towel , to kiss bread symbolized unity, peace, love , understanding among people. This custom has a good tradition in our country.
Towel were used in different ceremonies and in everyday life as well: for wiping a face and hands, for drying dishes, for decorating the houses, for presenting dear people. The ornaments and colours of towels were different in different regions. A lot of songs about the embroidered towel have been created in Ukraine.

His original name was Daniel Foe, but in his middle 30s, Daniel started calling himself “Defoe” because it sounded more gentlemanly. He received a good education and he became a businessman. He liked his profession, although he was often unsuccessful. In 1684, Defoe married Mary Tuffley. Their marriage lasted for 47 years, until Defoe’s death. They had eight children.
Defoe’s first writings were about politics. In many of his works, he supported King William III. From 1704 to 1713, he wrote and published a journal called the Review. In this journal, Defoe supported the government. The articles were not only about politics, but also about religion, business, morals, and so on. In 1713, he was put in prison for his writings. However, he continued to produce the journal even in prison.
In 1719, Defoe wrote his most famous book, Robinson Crusoe. It is the story of an Englishman who leaves his home to go to sea. He survives a shipwreck and lives on an island for 28 years, alone for most of the time. He discovers that the island is sometimes visited by cannibals. They kill and eat prisoners there. One of the prisoners escapes and Robinson helps him. He names his new friend Friday, teaches him English and makes him a Christian. At the end, the two men leave the island and get to England.
When he published Robinson Crusoe, Defoe was 59 years old. He wrote some other books after that, for example Moll Flanders or Captain Singleton. The main characters in these books are often criminals. In 1724, Defoe published his last important work of fiction, Roxana.
Daniel Defoe died on April 24, 1731. Because of Robinson Crusoe, he has been called “the father of the English novel”.

The Seven Wonders of the World
- The seven wonders of the world were truly amazing. The best known of them is the Great Pyramid as it`s still here. It`s also the oldest. It was built in 2560BC for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu. For 3.800 years it was the tallest building on Earth, standing at nearly150 metres tall.
- The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built around 600 BC by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his sick wife, Amytis. The gardens had many plants from her homeland, Persia. The large gardens were remarkable because they were built on stone terraces which were watered by a series of complicated pumps.
- Many of the Seven Wonders were destroyed by earthquakes. This includes the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, which has been one of the most popular tourist sights for 600 years after it was built in 430 BC. The Lighthouse of Alexandria goes one better and was destroyed by two earthquakes in the 1300s – one after the other. It was built on the island of Pharos, off the coast of Egypt. During the day, a mirror was used at the top of the 130-metre-tall tower to help sailors find their way, while at night, a fire was lit.
- Some of the Seven Wonders had strange reasons for being built. The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek god of the sun, Helios. It was built to celebrate the island defeating an army of invaders and paid for by selling the equipment left behind by the defeated army. The Mausoleum of Mausolus was paid for by a Persian man named Mausolus. It was a tomb for him and his family, and Mausolus gave his name to the word “mausoleum”.
- The Temple of Artemis/Diana was built in 550 BC and dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of forests, hunting, the moon and many more things – luck not being one of them. It was burnt down by Herostratus, who wanted to be famous for burning down the famous temple, and then rebuilt by Alexander the Great, burnt down again, rebuilt and finally pulled down by the Christians
